Are you looking to get a new key made for your Mercedes-Benz? Did you lose all of your keys? That’s ok. If you own a newer Mercedes-Benz, you don’t need the old keys to order a new Mercedes key. Just follow the instructions below on how to order a new Mercedes key.

Replacement Keys for Older Mercedes-Benz Models

Amazon product imageWe have learned that Replacement key availability for older Mercedes-Benz models varies by VIN, model, and key type. Contact an authorized dealer first. Mercedes-Benz Classic still lists replacement keys for some older vehicles. Generally, if you own a pre-2000 Mercedes-Benz, you may have difficulty finding a replacement key. You should check with the dealer, but here are your options if replacement keys are no longer available for your car.

Find an experienced automotive locksmith who works on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Key availability and programming options depend on the model, year, and immobilizer system. Confirm that the locksmith can service your exact vehicle before scheduling the work.

Not all locksmiths can make Mercedes-Benz keys, but in most major cities, you will find locksmiths who can make Mercedes-Benz keys. Another option on FBS3 era cars, particularly if all keys are lost or the dealer can no longer supply a key for your VIN, is to work on the ignition module itself. Module Medics clones the EIS as a mail in service and can supply a matching key set, so the car is driveable again without a dealer visit.

How to order a new Mercedes replacement key

What do you need to order a new key? You don’t need the car with you or even your existing key. The dealer will order the right key for your car from the VIN. However, dealers strictly verify vehicle ownership.

If you are the current owner of the vehicle

  • Find the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.
  • Get your current vehicle registration. If the vehicle is not currently registered, ask the dealer whether the original title is acceptable.
  • Get your driver’s license, passport, or identity card.
  • Head over to the dealer.
  • Show them your documents and pay the quoted key and service charges. In some cases, new keys may cost up to $560, as reported by Mercedes-Benz owners.
  • Availability and delivery time vary by model and VIN. Ask the dealer whether the key is available and when it can be activated.

If you are not the registered owner

  • Bring the required ownership documents, plus the following items:
  • A signed and dated authorization from the vehicle owner for which the key is being requested.

Tips for ordering and protecting your key

  • Use a Silicone Key Fob cover for your Mercedes key to protect your key from accidental damage.
  • If the key fob shell is damaged, consider replacing your Mercedes key shell with a replacement key shell. Our guide to the Mercedes key fob case upgrade shows the swap.
  • For some models, you can order a WALLET KEY, which will unlock and start the car but doesn’t have the keyless door functions. Some older models may have a mechanical or limited-function key option. Ask the dealer what key types remain available for your VIN.
  • Confirm the document requirements with the dealer before visiting. Many dealers require original documents.
  • Each intelligent key uses a rolling code when it locks or unlocks your car. Mercedes-Benz electronic keys are coded for a specific vehicle. Used electronic keys generally cannot be reassigned to another VIN.
  • If a key is lost or stolen, you can take your car to the dealer, and they can disable the lost key. The dealer can deactivate the electronic functions of a lost key, but its mechanical blade may still open the vehicle’s locks. Ask the dealer whether lock-cylinder replacement is appropriate if the key was stolen.
  • Mercedes-Benz says that they need to synchronize the new key to the car. You can easily do that yourself. The key comes pre-programmed to your car and will start without further programming. The synchronization is more for the doors, windows, and unlock functions, which you can do yourself with our window and sunroof synchronization procedure.

Before ordering, rule out the cheaper possibility: if the key exists but nothing happens when you press it, see Mercedes key fob not working.

These steps work if you live in the USA, Canada, or any country with an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer near you.

Run a full system scan on your Mercedes-Benz

Before you buy parts, scan every control module, not just the engine. It shows the root fault behind the warning lights and tells you whether the problem is still active. See how to do a full health check.
