Reader Stories: Mercedes-Benz Fixes from MB Medic Readers

Every week Mercedes-Benz owners land here with a warning light, a car that will not start or a dealer quote that does not add up. These are some of the stories they shared in the comments after a guide helped them fix the problem themselves. We have shortened a few for length.

Saved Thousands Over the Shop Quote

My friend’s wife’s C200 threw a P0700 transmission code and a local garage said the gearbox was beyond repair: £1,800 for a reconditioned unit. I checked the fluid, dropped the pan and the valve body, and changed the conductor plate and connector plug with new fluid and filter. Problem fixed, and two months later it is still fine. Total cost £300.

I stopped for coffee on the way to work and came back to a shifter stuck in Park. I walked the rest of the way, found your site and the short video showing how to release it. On the third try it released. One shop told me at least $1,200 and another told me at least a week, the week before Christmas. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

This article is a great resource. My W211 was stuck in limp mode because of a bad 13 pin connector. Problem solved for less than $20.

Excellent information. This saved me from the unnecessary expense of doing things the way different mechanics recommended. Thank you.

Back on the Road the Same Day

Finished a 12 hour shift, got in the car and it would not go into Drive, and then it started to rain. Found this site, and 15 minutes later the car was in Drive. As an engineer all I need is the facts, and I got them in the first sentence. Thank you MB Medic.

I bought a smart that had been sitting for a year. It ran smoothly after a jump start but jerked badly in forward and reverse. I followed this reset procedure and it drove perfectly afterward. I only paid £300 for the car because of that fault. Thank you!

This helped solve a P0730 gear ratio incorrect problem. After a sharp roundabout the car jolted and dropped into limp home mode. After the reset the gears shifted normally again. Thanks for the tip.

Wish I had found you sooner. Your seat synchronization procedure worked, after I had already tried a used door switch with no effect. Thanks ever so much.

Tips Readers Shared Back

On my R350 I had no sound from the speakers for a month and a fuse kept blowing. Under the spare tire I found water and a corroded, unused connector sitting in it. I cut the connector off and dried everything, and the fuse stopped blowing and the sound came back. As these cars age, the spare tire well is worth checking.

Our Sprinter had random no starts since new and no workshop could find why. Then 900 km from home the key would not turn at all. It turned out to be a failed ESL steering lock actuator. If your Sprinter has random no starts and the key sometimes will not turn, have the ESL checked early.

Why Owners Keep Coming Back

This is my first Mercedes-Benz and this site has been an amazing resource. I found the article on resetting the transmission so it adapts to my driving style. You were right, it is like getting a new transmission. Thanks for being part of making this possible.

This article cleared up a lot about buying a used Mercedes. My last used E280 went to the mechanic over high repair costs. Now I know which years are troublesome and which engines and transmissions to avoid. Thank you for such a detailed article.
