How to change the broken interior door handle on Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 and SLK R170. The driver’s door handle on C230, C240, C280, C350, and C320 may break. You can replace the broken door handle instead of replacing the door panel, which is too expensive. We will show you how you can fix the door handle yourself. Follow these simple instructions on removing the broken door handle from your C-Class and replacing it with a new one. Interior door handles can be replaced at home with the right tools.
C-Class W203 Door Handle Removal
You will need a flat screwdriver, a Torx Set, and a new door handle to replace the broken interior door handle on your C-Class. All these items cost well under $60. Instructions on how to replace the door handle on W203 / R170
Step 1. Open the driver’s door and locate the broken door handle.
Step 2. Use the flat screwdriver to pop out the cover from the door handle. Once you pry out the door handle cover, you should see the two screws, one at the top and one at the bottom of the door handle.
Step 3. Remove the two bolts that hold the broken door handle in place. These require that you use T-30 torx.
Step 4. Remove the door handle. This can be tricky, but it can be done with the door panel still in place. If you cannot remove the door handle, you may have to remove the door panel from the car to remove the broken door handle. Step 5. Install the new door handle. Press it in place and tighten the two T-30 screws. Push the cover on top of the door handle in. The cover does not have screws; it just snaps in place.
Three things decide which handle you need
Look at the part list further down and you will see why ordering is where this job goes wrong. The same car takes several different handles, and a wrong one is a return rather than a repair.
- Which side. Front left and front right are different parts with different numbers. They are not symmetrical and they do not swap.
- Interior color. These handles are finished to match the trim, which is why the list below names colors such as Alpaca Grey and Anthracite rather than just a part. Order by the color actually in your car, not by the car’s paint.
- The number on the old part. The surest check costs nothing: once the broken handle is out, read the number molded into it and compare it with what you are about to order.
That last one is also the argument for doing the removal first and ordering second, if you can manage without the handle for a day or two.
If you do end up taking the door panel off
Step 4 says the handle can usually be changed with the panel in place, and that is worth trying first. If it does have to come off, there is one thing to get right on the way back.
Behind the panel is a plastic vapor barrier sealed to the door skin. It is not cosmetic. A door is designed to let rain in and drain it out again down the inside of the skin, and that barrier is what keeps the water on the outside of the cabin. If it is torn, or pressed back without resealing it properly, water runs onto the carpet instead of out of the drain, and a damp Mercedes footwell is a far worse problem than the handle you came to fix. Peel it back carefully rather than tearing it, and press it home onto clean sealant all the way round.
While the panel is off, check the door drains at the bottom edge are clear. It is a thirty second job you will never have a better chance to do.

Does this job need a scanner?
No. An interior door handle is a mechanical part held in by two Torx screws and nothing on this page talks to a control unit.
The only reason to reach for one is if the door panel came off and something electrical misbehaves afterwards: the window stops going up, the mirror will not adjust, or the central locking gets strange on that door alone. All of those live in the same door and all of them are connectors you just disturbed. A full system scan reads the door and body modules rather than only the engine, so it will tell you whether the car has logged a fault on that specific door or whether you simply have a plug that is not seated. If nothing electrical was disturbed, none of that applies and the job is finished when the handle clicks.

Thank you for the instructions. I recommend a minor change: keeping the door panel in place requires a small amount of destruction to the panel because the two small torx screws that attach the handle from the back will tear the panel.
