Having problems with the air suspension on your Mercedes-Benz? Before replacing the compressor, verify that the compressor is actually the cause of the fault. Check the AIRMATIC fault codes, compressor power supply, fuse and relay, and inspect the system for air leaks. A leaking air spring, line, fitting, or valve block can cause the compressor to run excessively and eventually fail. This guide covers replacement of the AIRMATIC air-suspension compressor on selected Mercedes-Benz models. The compressor location, mounting, air-line connections, electrical connections, and service procedure vary by chassis. This procedure does not apply to Mercedes-Benz models equipped with ABC (Active Body Control), which uses a hydraulic suspension system. Changing the air compressor pump on a Mercedes-Benz is not tricky. For this repair, you will find a replacement AirMatic air compressor.
RECOMMENDED TOOLS
A toolbox with your standard sockets, screwdrivers, and pliers should be all you need to complete this job. It will be helpful if you have an anti-seize spray to help remove the bolts. PARTS REQUIRED
A new unit can be purchased on Amazon for $300-$400; links are below. You could also buy a used suspension air compressor pump for around $100-$200; see the link below. A used compressor may be less expensive, but its condition and remaining service life are difficult to verify. A new or professionally remanufactured compressor with the correct specification is generally easier to verify.

How to remove and install an air compressor unit.

STEP 1
Remove the black plastic panel under the engine. There may be as many as 3 panels under the car. You need to remove the first panel right after the front bumper. Once you remove the panel, you will see the air compressor right behind the front bumper, underneath the headlight on the passenger side. For demonstration purposes, we are showing pictures with the bumper removed. You do not need to remove the front bumper.
STEP 2
Remove the plastic airline that goes into the air compressor. Disconnect the AIRMATIC pressure line from the compressor using the correct wrench for the fitting on your vehicle. Do not force the fitting or twist the air line. Protect the sealing surfaces from dirt and inspect the seal/O-ring before reassembly.
WARNING: AIRMATIC systems can contain pressurized air. Do not disconnect an air line while the system is pressurized. Follow the service procedure for your specific chassis to depressurize the system before opening an air connection. Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by its air suspension. Use properly rated jack stands or a suitable vehicle lift.

Unplug the two electrical connectors that go to the air compressor.

Remove the air compressor unit.

Install a new compressor. Assemble in reverse order. When installing a new compressor, inspect and, where specified by the vehicle’s service procedure, replace the AIRMATIC compressor relay. A relay with damaged contacts can contribute to compressor failure. After replacement, check the AIRMATIC system for stored faults and verify ride-height operation. If the vehicle reports a ride-height or calibration fault, perform the applicable calibration/teach-in procedure using the appropriate diagnostic equipment.
