iCarsoft MB V4.0 Review: What It Does on a Mercedes-Benz and Where It Falls Short

Last updated:

Quick answer: The iCarsoft MB V4.0 is a capable, low cost Mercedes-Benz scanner. It reads and clears every module, shows live data and runs about 41 service and adaptation functions for around $230. It has no topology map, no AI diagnosis and only a small set of active tests. If you want the closest thing to the dealer’s Xentry in a DIY tool, the UCAN-II Pro goes much further.

What the MB V4.0 Does Well

  • Full Mercedes system scan. It reads and clears codes in the engine, transmission, ABS and ESP, SRS, SAM, Airmatic and body modules, and shows live data from each.
  • The service jobs most owners need. Oil reset, EPB brake pad service, steering angle reset, DPF regeneration, injector coding, ABS bleeding, air suspension service, battery registration and throttle adaptation are all on iCarsoft’s core list.
  • Newer chassis. iCarsoft names CAN-FD cars such as the W213, W223, W167, W206 and EQ models. Its own FAQ says 2024 and newer coverage varies, so send your VIN before you buy.
  • No subscription. Updates are free over Wi-Fi.
All 32 high level functions iCarsoft lists

TPMS reset, air conditioner service, headlamp service, body stability control service, engine control service, transmission control service, seat service, door, window and roof, fuel pump service, air filter control service, engine idle service, immobilizer service, door service, exhaust gas recirculation, AdBlue, clutch matching, electronic water pump, crankshaft learning, cruise control, language setting, NOx sensor, rain and light sensor, automatic stop and start, turbocharger, radar and camera, cylinder shutoff test, speed limit assist, control unit reset, oxygen sensor, seat belt, mileage verification and VIN verification.

Where the MB V4.0 Falls Short

  • No topology map. You get a list of modules, not a map of the network. On a Mercedes with a CAN bus or module communication fault, a topology map that shows which modules are offline or faulted at a glance is often the fastest way to the problem.
  • No AI diagnosis. It shows the code and the fault text, but it does not explain the likely causes or rank the fixes.
  • Few active tests. iCarsoft cites 22+ active tests. Proving a SAM output, a door module or an Airmatic valve block often takes more than that.
  • Small wired handheld. The 5 inch screen is tethered to the OBD port while you work.
  • One make plus two. Fine for a Mercedes only household, limiting if you also work on another brand.
  • DoIP is not listed. Check your VIN with iCarsoft if your Mercedes is a 2021 or newer model.

Why the UCAN-II Pro Is Closer to Xentry

The jobs where a Mercedes owner usually ends up at the dealer are network faults, module problems and adaptations after a repair. That is where the gap between these two tools shows.

  • Topology map. Like Xentry’s quick test view, the UCAN-II Pro draws the vehicle network so you can see which modules answer, which are faulted and which are offline, instead of scrolling a list.
  • AI diagnosis. After a full scan it explains what the codes mean together, the likely causes and which fix to check first.
  • Depth. 3,500+ active tests and 1,000+ special functions, adaptations and relearns, compared with 22+ tests and 41 functions on the MB V4.0.
  • Older Mercedes too. A Mercedes 38 pin adapter is available to UCAN-II owners for pre 2001 cars.
  • More than one car. 140+ makes on one tablet, with US phone support if you get stuck.

What it does not do: online SCN coding of new control units, which still needs the dealer’s Xentry with a Mercedes online account. For everything short of that, the UCAN-II Pro is the closest DIY tool to the dealer experience.

Which One Should You Buy?

Choose the iCarsoft MB V4.0 if you own one Mercedes, want to read and clear codes, and mainly need oil resets, EPB service, battery registration and DPF regeneration on a budget under $250.

Choose the UCAN-II Pro if you are chasing electrical, network, SAM, Airmatic or module faults, want the topology map and AI diagnosis, work on more than one make, or want the tool that keeps you away from the dealer for the harder jobs. See the UCAN-II Pro.

Older iCarsoft Mercedes Scanners

The MB V4.0 is the latest in a line that started with the i980, followed by the MB II, the MB V2.0 and the MB V3.0. The MB II is still the one most owners have in the garage; we cover it in our iCarsoft MB II review.

The Original iCarsoft i980 (Our 2016 Review)

This page started life as our 2016 review of the i980. The iCarsoft i980 is an OBD II diagnostic scanner that is easy to use and can read more than just the Check Engine Light codes. It can access multiple control units on Mercedes-Benz cars with an OBD2 port, made after 1996. On the W210 and W208 chassis it is limited to the engine ECU, as those chassis need a 38 pin connector for further diagnosis. On newer models it can access several control units, including the airbag control unit on most cars. It has no reset or service functions.

i980 OBD II functions and control units covered

OBD II functions: read codes, erase codes, I/M readiness, data stream, freeze frame, O2 sensor test, on board monitoring, EVAP system test and vehicle information (VIN and CVN).

Control units covered (not on every model, and only if the car has that unit): engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions and electronic selector modules, Airmatic and Active Body Control, ESP, ASR, ETS, ABS, BAS and SBC braking systems, SRS airbags, body modules (OCP, UCP, LCP, SCM, SKF, KFB, RCM, DCM), drive authorization, SAM modules, EIS, pneumatic system equipment and ATA, climate control, instrument cluster, tire pressure control, Parktronic, Keyless Go, D2B COMAND and audio gateway (D2B and MOST), TV tuner, headlamp range adjustment, seat electronics, RVC, RST and Vario roof modules, automatic clutch ACS, M-Class body modules (AAM, EAM, DAS, SEM, VG transfer case) and ASSYST and ASSYST PLUS.

Open the SRS airbag compatibility chart for Mercedes-Benz (PDF) to see whether the i980 can reset the airbag light on your chassis. If an SRS reset is all you need and you find an i980 cheaply, it still does that job.

FAQ

Does the iCarsoft MB V4.0 work on older Mercedes with the round 38 pin connector?

Only with iCarsoft’s optional 38 pin adapter, sold separately, which covers pre 2001 cars such as the W202. Without it, the scanner sees nothing on those cars.

Does the MB V4.0 need a subscription?

No. iCarsoft lists lifetime free updates over Wi-Fi.

Is the MB V4.0 better than the MB II?

Yes. It adds dozens of service and adaptation functions, CAN-FD support for newer chassis and Wi-Fi updates. The MB II reads and clears faults and shows live data but cannot program.

Is the UCAN-II Pro worth about $255 more?

If you only reset oil service and read codes, no. If you diagnose electrical and module faults, want a topology map and AI diagnosis, or own more than one make, the extra depth usually pays for itself the first time it keeps a car away from the dealer.
